Athletic Club will join La Liga’s Retro Matchday wearing a special kit inspired by the early 1970s. The redesigned red-and-white closedcollar shirt, black shorts, and classic striped socks will be used in Matchday 31 against Villarreal CF at San Mamés. 

 The tribute highlights a decisive period for the Club (1970–1975), marked by milestones such as the recovery of the name Athletic Club, the opening of the Lezama facilities, and the reaffirmation of the Club’s sporting philosophy despite the arrival of foreign players in the league. 

This era also included the 1973 Copa title, featuring legends like Iribar, Txetxu Rojo, Iñaki Sáez, and Antón Arieta, as well as the “Operation Return,” which brought home several Basque players from other La Liga teams. 

Athletic also celebrated its 75th anniversary in 1973 with an international tournament at a renovated San Mamés, which introduced the new East Stand and new communication initiatives such as the club magazine and matchday program. 

It was a period of social and cultural change, marked by growing demands for women’s membership and the cultural revival of the Basque language, symbolized by Mikel Laboa’s Txoria txori.
